Donald Trump, thepresumptive Republican presidential candidate, said he would make an “exception” for themayor to his proposed ban on Muslims entering America. Mr Khan dismissed the offer.

　　In other elections in Britain, the Conservatives surged to replace Labour as the second party inScotland behind the nationalist SNP, which lost its majority rule. In Wales the right-wing anti-Europe UK Independence Party claimed seven seats, their first ever in the Welsh Assembly. InEngland Labour avoided the drubbing that was expected in council elections. It still lost seats,though not as many as the ruling Tories.
