   Headphones have improved a lot in terms ofcomfort and sound quality over the past century,but the basic concept hasn't changed. Attach themto an audio source, put them on or in your ears,and you'll hear sound via your eardrums.

  上个世纪,耳机在舒适度和音质方面大有改善,但基本概念没有变。将耳机的一端与音频源连接,另一端放在或塞进耳朵,然后你就能通过耳鼓听到音乐声了。

  But a new technology turns that old approach onits, well, head.

  然而一项新的技术却颠覆了这种观点。

  About a decade ago, VoxLinc designed a headphone for the military and law enforcement thatconveyed sound to the listener through the cheekbones. Such bone-conducted audio reachesthe cochlea directly, completely bypassing the eardrum. As a result there's no need to placeanything on the ear that would block ambient noise.

  大约十年前,VoxLinc 专门为军队和执法机构设计了一款通过颧骨传送声音的耳机。这种通过骨传导的声音完全绕过耳鼓,直接传入耳蜗。因此就没有必要在耳朵上带任何东西了。

  Now VoxLinc is using the same bone-conduction technology in its AfterShokz headphones.AfterShokz even works for some hearing-impaired listeners, as long as the cochlea or thenerves around it are intact.

  如今,VoxLinc 利用这项骨传导技术新开发了一款耳机 AfterShokz。对于某些患有听觉障碍的人来说,只要耳蜗或者耳蜗四周的神经完好无损就能使用这种AfterShokz 耳机。

  The phones wrap around the back of the head and rest just in front of the ears. They’re beingmarketed to bicyclists, who could then listen to tunes and still have their ears open to heartraffic. Although some might say that such potentially distracted cyclists have a lot of cheek.

  戴这种耳机时,需将它环绕在后脑勺,靠在耳朵前方。这款耳机将会卖给自行车手,这样在骑车时他们就能边听音乐边注意交通路况。不过也不乏有调侃的声音:他们得长许多颧骨才行啊。
