Rolling five straight sevens at the craps table.Sinking eight consecutive three-point basketballshots. Making the light at the intersection every dayall week.

Such streaks are all easily within the bounds ofstatistical probability. But when they’re happening, people believe that they have what isoften called the hot hand. Our brains are hardwired to find such patterns and meaning. Andnow researchers find that other primates also appear to believe in streaks.

Scientists created computer games that could be played by rhesus monkeys. Some of thegames were programmed to show clear patterns—that is, they were fixed. But one game gaverandom results.

The monkeys played more than a thousand rounds, for rewards. They did well in the gameswith the obvious patterns. But in the random game, the monkeys made moves indicating thatthey nevertheless expected patterns to occur. The study is in the Journal of ExperimentalPsychology: Animal Learning and Cognition. [Tommy C. Blanchard, Adreas Wilke and BenjaminY. Hayden, Hot-hand bias in rhesus monkeys]

Evolution clearly favors the ability to find patterns—foraging for food and noticing wherebunches of fruits occur is a great survival tool. But believing in a hot hand, especially incasinos, can make monkeys out of all of us.

  1.craps table

Raggedy Ann won big on the craps table but thengot greedy, didn't she?

  2.statistical probability

Experts suggest that to knowingly give oneself over to a behavior that has a statisticalprobability of shortening life is similar to attempting suicide.

  3.rhesus monkey

In their lab in North Carolina, the researchers trained a rhesus monkey to walk upright on atreadmill.
