　　When it comes to first impressions of a potentialnew love, the eyes may indeed be the window to thesoul—because the direction of your gaze whenlooking at this person offers an unconscious,automatic giveaway of whether your initial reactionis romance or sex. That's according to a study in thejournalPsychological Science.

　　Heterosexual subjects looked at photographs on a computer of fully clothed, attractivestrangers of the opposite sex. For each photo, they had to decide as quickly as possible if theyexperienced feelings of either sexual lust or romantic love.

　　科学家要求异性恋志愿者者坐在电脑前观看穿戴整齐、具有吸引力的陌生异性，且每看完一张照片，让他们尽快对自己的内心感受做出抉择：是性欲?还是爱慕?

　　The researchers found no significant difference in the time it took subjects to make theirdecision. But eye-tracking data uncovered a big difference in where the subject looked. If oneof the volunteers felt lust for the individual in the photograph, they tended to look at the eyesfirst, then fixated on the body. While those who felt romantic love, were more likely to keeptheir attention only on the eyes and face.

　　The researchers say that identification of distinct visual patterns for love and lust could havetheoretical and clinical importance in couples therapy. Especially if one of them is looking outthe window at strangers.
